There are a few basic desires that draw an immediate, visceral response. Love. Sex. Hunger. Pity.
Home. The idea of a person having a set habitat and community has radically changed in the last twenty years with affordable international travel, increased access to goods from around the world and the explosion of online social networking sites. But the need for place has not been compromised by these innovations. What does "home" mean now?
Theatre by the River's 2010 season presents three plays with questions about home. Judith Thompson's Habitat presents a compelling hypothesis: what would happen if a halfway house for troubled youth was established in an affluent Canadian neighbourhood? A couple of newlyweds search for a new community after everyone they know dies in Sean Reycraft's darkly funny One Good Marriage. And our remount of Molly Thom's The Bush Ladies (touring to schools throughout the province) will present a new generation with the reflections of four intrepid women who had to forge homes in the bleak Canadian wilds.
We hope you'll join us.
